The Empty Quarter gallery presents its newest photography exhibition – 7 Princesses – in collaboration with celebrated photographer and friend of the gallery, Steve McCurry. The exhibition’s title refers to the seven emirates of the UAE, as the project aims to celebrate these emirates as much as the local and international influences of the Emirati women who call them home. The landmark exhibition has been inaugurated by His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan.

Twenty influential and inspirational Emirati women were photographed throughout the emirates in a series of portraits that frame the crucial roles of the modern and dynamic Emirati woman. These are as much portraits of the contemporary Emirati woman as they of the emirates themselves.

By highlighting the social and cultural roles that today’s women inhabit in the UAE, 7 Princesses sets out not only to celebrate this, but also to inform and build bridges internationally, providing an updated and contemporary reflection of women’s true influence within society.

“Steve McCurry is one of our muses in photography, he is the king of light. I am delighted to work with him on this project because he has his own unique way to tell stories and bring images alive. This project will give all cultures a chance to explore and understand the enlightenment of Emirati women through these images,” says Safa Al Hamed, Managing Partner of The Empty Quarter, of the collaboration with Steve McCurry for the project. “Our vision is to create a centre of photography. We want to promote photographers both in the Middle East and internationally.”

Steve McCurry has staged one solo exhibition at the gallery before, this will be his second, however, it is the first joint collaboration project between the gallery and McCurry.

“I’ve been working with The Empty Quarter for a number of years and find them to be not only one of the best galleries in the Middle East, but also in the world. Photographing the seven Emirates for 7 Princesses, I was very intrigued and thought this would be a great new adventure and experience. I look forward to launching this very unique project with these incredibly accomplished women, from all of the seven emirates,” says photographer Steve McCurry.
